Solar Power System in Pakistan for your house

Solar Power System in Pakistan for your house

Pakistan is a country where load shedding of electricity has been persistent for past few years. Most of the households in urban centers and some in the rural towns have made their backup plans through UPSs and generators. There are predictions and history tells us too that just before elections, the Government fulfills the demand of consumers and reduces load shedding but it increases again thereafter. Unfortunately, this is one major reason people have to keep reinvesting/ spending on their backup systems.

Solar Power electric system is also one of the backup option. The best part of this backup option is that it gives you greener and cleaner electricity hence reducing impact on pollution. This means that we start thinking for our kids providing them cleaner air to breathe and greener environment to live in. We also save fossil fuel for our generations to come. Additionally, we have almost unlimited backup time till we have day light so the backup time is much higher than the traditional UPSs. When I say that solar electric system or photo voltaic system as a backup option, I mean economical system with maximum output and minimum costs. The cons of converting all your power consumption on Solar Power Generation are:

i) You really don't know your consumption and normally install a larger system than your requirements.
ii) Consumption in winters is low than summers and actually you are planning for summers which means you are wasting lots of your resources by investing extra in the initial investment which you won't benefit from in at least 5 months of the year
iii) Requirement of storage tank or storage batteries is high. This is the cost that is incurred every year so a small storage bank is a viable option

Till the time, we don't have net metering system implemented in Pakistan large solar power generating system is not a viable option. Net metering system has been implemented in few countries very successfully including Germany where sunlight hours and intensity is much less. Concept of net metering is that the extra power that you produce and don't utilize is transferred to the national grid and you get paid for it. So, net electricity consumed (consumption of electricity from WAPDA - Supply of electricity to WAPDA) is what you pay for. So, if you supply more to the national grid and consume less from the national grid, you will actually make money.

Now having discussed all that your next question will be that what is the best and optimal solution you recommend? I would suggest 9 solar plates or photo voltaic cells of 250 Watts each, inverter of 3-5 KVA and 4 wet batteries of 19-23 plates. If you deduct the cost of UPS (i am assuming that your UPS gets out of order and your batteries are at the stage of replacement) and batteries which you have to buy, the incremental or additional cost is Rs. 225,000/- for installing this solar system which will be capable of running your Air Conditioner. Average household UPSs don't have capacity to run an Air Conditioner. You can have a smaller system too and this will produce electricity for all your appliances, fans, lights etc. except Air Conditioner and will incrementally cost you Rs. 150,000/-. I am quoting price for good quality system.

Lots of people ask me how we can utilize solar to the best of capacity. I suggest them to do electricity related activities from 10 am to 3 pm. Try to do washing (using washing machine), ironing (using iron) or cleaning (using vacuum cleaner during these timings. Afternoon nap in Air Conditioner is also recommended during these timings. After 3 pm, let the batteries get charged to the full capacity. This charging of batteries will give you backup of 2-3 hours at night. Clean the solar panels surface once every six months because dust on their surface can reduce their productivity.

A question arises that does electricity bill reduce when you install solar power system. I would say it depends. If you add on more convenience in your life by using uninterrupted Air Conditioners at night the bill would not decrease and if you mold your lifestyle a bit according to it, your electricity bill will reduce drastically. So, it is your choice whether you enhance convenience or reduce you electricity bill. If you add invertor Air Conditioner for the one which is used most frequently you can enjoy both. I also suggest that heating appliances like water geysers and electric heaters which are used in winters should be converted to the same. This will be helpful in reducing your gas bill in winters too. On the other hand, this will cost you a lot as you will have to change three to five appliances.

General trend in Pakistan is imposition of indirect taxes rather than direct taxes and major revenue to the Government exchequer comes from imposing taxes on electricity consumption. The higher consumption slabs cost higher. In near future, it would become really vital to install solar system in order to reduce your costs. So, it is right time to invest in it and have solar electric generation started at your house.

I agree with the comments above on the solar system. However net metering has been approved in Pakistan so the option is there. With batteries the system does not save any money in the long run.
