DESIGN THE PERFECT WARDROBES!
For us as designers, it is first crucial to understand your specific needs as a client in order to to design a functional wardrobe. When we first take on projects where designing wardrobes is part of the interior scope, we conduct a thorough lifestyle assessment to determine how you will use your clothing and accessories. So, we could encourage you to first start with a wardrobe inventor to understand what types and quantities of items you own. For example, are there more formal clothes you will use occasionally, how many casual everyday wear do you own, how many shoes; both formal and informal and how much space you would require for socks, undergarments etc. This helps in tailoring the design to your specific requirements, ensuring an efficient and practical layout.
Now, when it comes to materials, there are alot of options available depending on the aesthetic you want. One of the most popular choices is MDF (Medium-Density Fiberboard) which is known for its smooth surface and affordability. MDF is also ideal for painted finishes and veneers. Plywood is another great material which offers a good balance of strength and cost-effectiveness and it is used in both the structure and panels of wardrobes. Solid wood, such as oak, walnut, and teak is a more premium option, known for its durability and natural beauty, but of course, it comes at a higher cost. Laminate finishes are also very popular used for their versatility and resistance to scratches and stains, available in many colors and patterns and textures depending on your chosen theme.
Now, if you want glass shutters for that sleek, contemporary look then high-gloss acrylic and glass are a great choice. They provide a reflective surface that adds a touch of luxury to any space. Additionally some metal elements, such as aluminum frames and stainless steel handles, are often used to enhance the durability and style of contemporary wardrobes. For glass you can use tempered, frosted, tinted, mirror, or patterned glass
which can enhance both safety and style and also offer some privacy and light transmission. In metals, go for lightweight, rust-resistant aluminium and stainless steel which are very popular for their durability and sleek look. Brass can also be used, although this will be on the higher end cost wise
Effective space planning is very important. We need to optimise the layout to make the best use of available space, considering room dimensions, ceiling height, and any architectural constraints. Ensure the design is ergonomic, with frequently used items placed at more accessible heights for convenience; so that it is easy for your arms to reach out to them. We can tailor the design with features like extra hanging space for dresses or additional shoe racks if you have the need. We can also incorporate adjustable shelves, rods, and racks to allow for flexibility and changing needs over time.
Incorporating innovative storage solutions can greatly enhance functionality. For this, utilise pull-out systems for rods, trays, and shelves to improve access to items. Hidden compartments can provide secure storage for valuables or less frequently used items.
Designing for durability involves selecting durable hardware and opting for a timeless design that remains stylish over time. So what is wardrobe hardware? Wardrobe hardware includes the functional and decorative components we need for wardrobe design, including hinges, drawer slides, handles, hanging rods, and shelf supports. Soft-close hinges and slides enhance smooth operation and durability. Handles and knobs add aesthetic appeal, while adjustable shelves, pull-out accessories, and closet rod supports maximised storage. Specialised racks for ties, belts, and shoes,
as well as hooks and hangers, ensure organised and accessible storage. So, the right hardware ensures a wardrobe is functional, durable, and stylish, enhancing both usability and overall design. It is important to always go for very high-quality wardrobe hardware and not make any compensations in this area, otherwise you can run into problems like draws getting stuck, some pieces rusting and not working properly overtime.
Lighting is another critical aspect for your wardrobes. We should always aim to use a combination of ambient, task, and accent lighting to ensure the wardrobe is well-lit and functional. Ambient is general lighting, task is specific focussed lighting to be able to see things clearly and accent lighting is to add a touch of beaty and elegance which usually comes in the form of strip lighting.
Lastly, adding aesthetic elements like stylish handles, moldings, or decorative panels can enhance the visual appeal of the wardrobe. Always make sure that the color scheme complements the room’s overall colour palette and theme.
