Long-Lasting, Weather-Proof Finishes | Best for Karachi & Other Seaside Cities
Today, we will discuss a crucial topic relevant to home finishing, particularly in cities prone to weather-induced corrosion, like Karachi. Coastal cities face the persistent challenge of paint peeling and corroding within months due to the harsh environment, which can be extremely frustrating. In this blog, we will explore ways to maintain a beautiful facade through tiles without the constant need for upkeep!
I interviewed two top-tier tile vendors in Pakistan who provide the latest in durable outdoor tiles. Their high-quality materials ensure long-lasting beauty and satisfaction, making them a worthwhile investment for any project.
First, let’s talk about concrete tiles and why they are an outstanding choice for both durability and aesthetic appeal. Concrete tiles provide a natural, earthy look that complements industrial, rustic, or organic styles beautifully. Concrete tiles are made from a mix of cement, sand, water, and color pigments. While suitable for interiors, they are particularly effective for outdoor environments with harsher weather conditions. To understand their unique qualities, I spoke to Terra Tiles. Their professionals explained to me that high quality concrete tiles are crafted using white cement, coarse aggregates from our Hub River in Sindh, fine silica sand from Nooriabad, and PP fibers, all super quality strong materials which contribute to the tiles’ strength and durability. The mixing process uses weigh batching to ensure uniform strength, consistency, and appearance and all of this is in accordance with international standards of tile durability. Easy-flowing concrete is poured to spread and settle smoothly, avoiding separation or air bubbles.
Concrete tiles require minimal maintenance and are highly resistant to wear, weather, stains, and mold. When properly sealed and installed, they are easy to clean with mild detergent and water. Their strength and longevity make them a cost-effective choice, as they don’t require frequent replacements or any special treatments long term. Additionally, they can help manage seepage on walls over time.
Nowadays, in concrete tiles, there’s a wide variety of products available, each offering diverse aesthetic options:
Cement Concrete Tiles for facades
Exposed Terrazzo Tiles
Roof Insulation Tiles (CC & Terrazzo Top)
Terrazzo Tiles
Terrazzo Tread and Riser for Staircases
Landscape Garden Pavers
Stone Finish Pavers
Garden Stepping Stone (Flugstone)
Swimming Pool Tiles
Once installed, these products require minimal maintenance for many years, making them a worthwhile investment in both beauty and durability. Terrazzo finishes, in particular, are currently in vogue and can be achieved with concrete tiles suitable for indoor and outdoor flooring, as well as rooftop applications, creating stunning outdoor spaces. Additionally, for rooftops, insulation tiles are available, offering not only temperature control for indoor spaces but also enhancing the rooftop’s aesthetic appeal.
I also had the opportunity to speak with another reputable tile vendor in Pakistan, City Tiles, renowned for their extensive selection of durable outdoor tiles. During our discussion, their representative shed light on the remarkable qualities of their available materials, particularly emphasising the durability of porcelain tiles for outdoor use. Porcelain, indeed, stands out as an excellent choice for outdoor applications due to its composition. Crafted from dense clay fired at exceptionally high temperatures, porcelain tiles have inherent non-porosity and remarkable resistance to moisture absorption and stains. This robustness enables porcelain tiles to endure heavy foot traffic and extreme weather conditions, including exposure to UV radiation, without succumbing to deterioration or fading over time.
Additionally, porcelain tiles exhibit resistance to mold, mildew, and algae growth, ensuring a consistently clean and safe outdoor surface. Furthermore, the extensive range of colors, textures, and finishes available in porcelain tiles facilitates endless design possibilities tailored to suit any outdoor space’s aesthetic preferences.
If we go into the comparison between ceramic and porcelain tiles for outdoor use, there are some important distinctions. Porcelain tiles excel due to their lower water absorption rate and higher density compared to ceramic counterparts. This makes them less vulnerable to moisture penetration and damage from freeze-thaw cycles, translating to enhanced longevity in outdoor environments. Compared to ceramic tiles, porcelain tiles actually boast superior strength and durability, enabling them to withstand heavy foot traffic and impacts with greater resilience. Their reduced porosity also enhances stain resistance, simplifying maintenance in outdoor areas prone to dirt and spills. While both ceramic and porcelain tiles present viable options, porcelain tiles typically outshine ceramic tiles in terms of durability, water resistance, and design versatility for outdoor applications.
City Tiles highlighted a cutting-edge technology utilized in porcelain tiles known as Bisque technology. This innovative manufacturing process involves firing the tiles at a lower temperature compared to traditional ceramic tiles, allowing them to retain a more porous and absorbent structure. This characteristic makes Bisque tiles suitable for specific applications where a higher level of porosity is desired, such as glazing or surface treatments. Additionally, Bisque tiles often feature a softer, matte finish compared to fully vitrified tiles, catering to various design aesthetics.
And of course, the immensely popular wood-look porcelain tiles emerge as an excellent option for outdoor use. They seamlessly replicate various natural wood textures and finishes with striking authenticity, providing the timeless appeal of real wood in a durable, long-lasting porcelain material. Beyond the conventional flat and simple wooden plank-like tiles, these wood-look tiles now come in an array of captivating patterns. These patterned variants can elevate the aesthetic of outdoor wall areas, adding a touch of glamour to any outdoor space.
Wood-look porcelain tiles are a remarkable innovation in the world of tiling, offering the timeless charm of natural wood with the durability and versatility of porcelain. The production of wood-look porcelain tiles typically involves high-resolution digital printing technology, which allows for precise reproduction of wood grain patterns, knots, and color variations. During the manufacturing process, porcelain clay is finely ground, mixed with water, and then pressed into molds to form tile shapes. The digitally printed wood designs are then applied onto the surface of the tiles before they undergo firing in kilns at high temperatures.
Many local tile vendors provide these versatile tiles, suitable not only for wall applications but also for areas like pool decks, perfectly mimicking the appearance of real wooden flooring.
In addition to the sought-after wood-look tiles, vendors such as City Tiles offer an extensive selection of stone-like finishes, including travertine. These options replicate the luxurious look of travertine at a fraction of the cost. With porcelain outdoor tiles, you can achieve any desired stone-look finish, opening up a world of possibilities. This material’s versatility knows no bounds, making it an ideal choice for outdoor home finishing.
